A LITTLE PONY EXPRESS HISTORY

The legendary Pony Express began carrying mail between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, in April 1860. Riders changed horses at relay stations along the nearly 2,000-mile route, helping messages cross the frontier in roughly 10 days.

The service was operated by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company—the company referenced by the initials on the lock’s brass tag. Although the Pony Express operated for only about 18 months before the transcontinental telegraph made it obsolete, its daring riders became enduring symbols of speed, courage, and the American frontier.
